Non-invasive technology may help more complicated cases of epilepsy

A sophisticated technological device designed in Spain may prove to be an alternative therapy against the most complicated cases of epilepsy, those that do not respond to pharmacological treatments.

After overcoming several experimental phases, the Spanish company Neutronics already has authorization from the United States drug agency (FDA) to carry out a clinical trial with 140 patients and demonstrate the effectiveness of this new technology in reducing epileptic seizures.

It is the first step in a field – that of non-invasive and high definition cranial stimulation – that is proposed as personalized brain therapy and that in the future can be used for diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases or cognitive disorders.

Speaking to EFE, Ana Maiques, who received the European Commission’s award for innovative women in 2014, said that this “is not science fiction”, but that it is also necessary to know how to manage the expectations that any medical advancement generates among patients.

The technology consists of a ‘hat’ capable of injecting small electrical currents into the brain through electrodes, a system that Ana Maiques defines as “non-invasive neuronal stimulation” and which in the coming years could be consolidated as a new therapy against certain diseases.

The combination of computer programs with artificial intelligence allows to decide how many electrodes and what type of current to use in each pathology, explained the scientist to EFE, who pointed out the interest that this medical technology may have for the treatment of other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia .

Since it is a therapy that acts on the cerebral cortex, it will not be effective in the treatment of other diseases such as Parkinson’s, located in “very deep” areas of the brain, but in pathologies located in the cortex, among which he mentioned cognitive disorders, hyperactivity, autism or attention deficit.
