Excessive hydration?

New study ensures that yes and identifies the signs and symptoms of who drinks too much water as well as what problems that excess can cause. The rule of drinking a minimum of two liters of water a day had already been contested, in fact, it is thirst. The study was published in El Pais.

These signs were flagged in the study and indicate the symptoms that reveal when we are drinking too much water. “People who drink less water than they should still have far more than the population that exceeds their consumption. However, it is curious that in the last few years it has been observed that the phenomenon of people with a healthy lifestyle is growing more and more with its bottle everywhere”, explained researcher Lluís Serra-Majem.

“It is not true that consuming more water than recommended helps to lose weight or improve health. There is, however, a specific measure of liters to consume: everything depends on something as simple as thirst. Humans have survived from the primates so far by thirst. Because before you drank only when you had to. Now we drink because we have more access to information and we constantly think of the number of glasses we drink each day”, added Professor Lluís Serra-Majem.

In an interview, he said that “from a cardiovascular and metabolic point of view, drinking more glasses of water than recommended should not pose a serious problem because the body filters and eliminates that water. I do not know of any pathology for excess hydration, except for severe cases in elite athletes and athletes who, if they drink too much, can suffer more cardiovascular failure than the body can assimilate”.

A second study by the University of Monash in Australia has shown that the brain has a defense mechanism that activates when it realizes that it is receiving more fluids than it should. In order to evaluate these data, the team recorded, through an MRI, brain activity and the effort involved in drinking water in two situations: thirsty, after intense physical exercise, and thirsty after consuming a lot of water.

The results obtained concluded that in cases of excessive water consumption, there was a sensation that the throat was ‘closing’ and cost up to three times more when drinking the liquid. What happens is that many people do not pay attention to this sign that they are already satisfied and continue to drink water because they believe they have to drink that amount per day. The kidneys are the major organs to be harmed.

The recommendation is therefore to drink only when one is thirsty, neither too much nor less. “If we want to compete in this type of evidence, we should train with professionals who teach us how to regulate sodium levels and measure our own hydration. It is not enough to read information on the internet about how much water we should drink, because each body is different and in these Cases, professional accompaniment is essential, because the health itself is at stake”, concludes José Antonio López Calbet, professor of Exercise Physiology at the University of Palmas, Gran Canaria.
